Fire Station 11 Case Study
Executive Summary
Client: City of Orlando, Fire Station 11 (Municipality)
Challenge: The City of Orlando sought to reduce energy costs and enhance sustainability by incorporating renewable energy solutions into municipal operations.
Solution: 15 lightyears provided a turnkey solar energy installation, optimizing energy efficiency and ensuring compliance with sustainability goals.
Key Results: Contributed to Orlando’s broader goal of 100% renewable energy for municipal operations by 2030.
The Challenge: Reducing Energy Costs & Meeting Sustainability Goals
The City of Orlando has set an ambitious target of achieving 100% renewable energy for municipal operations by 2030. As part of this initiative, Fire Station 11 required a solar energy solution that would:
- Reduce high operational energy costs
- Enhance sustainability and environmental responsibility
- Align with city-wide renewable energy commitments
- Ensure compliance with energy efficiency and green building regulations
With rising utility costs and the increasing need for sustainable infrastructure, the municipality sought an experienced solar energy contractor capable of delivering a cost-effective, high-performance system tailored to their operational needs.

Our Solution
We installed a custom solar energy solution consisting of a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system and a Lumos solar canopy. The rooftop array offsets a substantial portion of the building’s energy use, while the Lumos canopy provides additional generation capacity and functional covered space.
Both systems utilize high-efficiency solar modules, rapid shutdown safety features, and grid-tied inverters for seamless integration with the station’s electrical infrastructure. This installation supports the City of Orlando’s renewable energy goals and enhances resilience for critical emergency services.

Results & Impact: Driving Renewable Energy Goals
The installation of the solar energy system at Fire Station 11 has contributed to the City of Orlando’s larger commitment to sustainability, yielding:
- Reduction in energy costs – Lowered operational expenses through renewable energy generation
- Increased energy efficiency – Improved overall building performance and reduced reliance on traditional power sources
- Environmental impact – Contributed to the city’s carbon reduction initiatives by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels
- Progress toward 100% renewable energy – Supported the city’s goal of fully transitioning municipal operations to clean energy by 2030
This successful solar project demonstrates how municipalities can integrate renewable energy solutions to achieve financial savings, operational efficiency, and sustainability leadership.
